How We Treat: Headaches

Updated: Mar 3, 2021

At Integrate, we treat many patients suffering from various types of headaches including migraines, tension related headaches, TMJ related pain and cervicogenic headaches. Headaches can range from very minor discomfort to debilitating pain and dysfunction. Most of us will experience a headache at some point in our lives. Some of us are plagued with more frequent and intense headaches that often require some type of intervention, whether that be medication, relaxation techniques or manual therapy.

In some cases, very intense headaches can be insignificant and harmless in nature and pose little to no risk, just as in other cases minor headaches can have more serious causes. No matter what type of headache you’re experiencing, it’s important to notify your healthcare practitioner of the symptoms and to obtain an accurate diagnosis and cause of your headache symptoms.

Physiotherapy, Chiropractic, Massage Therapy and Acupuncture techniques have all been shown to be effective for certain types of headaches. Our therapists utilize an integrative team approach to diagnose your particular headache and provide therapeutic recommendations. These recommendations are personalized to you. They can be as simple as specific stretches or relaxation techniques to help alleviate the pain or more direct hands-on therapy. Below are some of the techniques our therapists have at their disposal for helping with headaches:

  • Myofascial release techniques (ART®, Graston®)

  • Joint Mobilizations or Manipulations

  • Trigger Point Therapies

  • Acupuncture

  • Dietary Recommendations and Stress Reduction.

  • Massage Therapy

How you choose to initiate therapy at our clinic is completely your decision. We have a highly effective team of Chiropractors, Physiotherapists, Registered Massage Therapists and Naturopaths, each with a specific approach for addressing your headaches. In some cases, patients prefer to start by seeing one particular type of therapist. Patients can start the process with an integrative assessment, consisting of a joint-consultation and exam with both a Chiropractor and a Physiotherapist on staff. The team will then form a recommendation for care based on their findings. These recommendations may include just one form of care (eg. physiotherapy alone) or multiple services within the clinic (eg. combination of massage therapy and chiropractic care). Our goal is to meet YOUR goal, effectively managing your headache.
